Nestled in the heart of Victoria, Patti Welder Stadium has been the home to countless football games throughouts its long storied existence. Built in 1944, Patti Welder Stadium was the original stadium of Patti Welder High School. When Victoria High and Stroman High were built, a new more modern stadium was built in the 1970's. Patti Welder Stadium was relegated to being used for junior high games. Over the years, there have been more than junior high games gracing the grass field. St. Joseph High School plays their varsity football games there while VISD uses the field to play their junior high and sub-varsity football and soccer games. In 2013, the stadium saw something not seen in Victoria, a champion on the gridiron. The Victoria Texans (now the Victoria Hurricanes) won the Crossroads Amateur Football League Championship as they went 14-0 for the season and defeated the Galveston Monarchs, 42-12. With a capacity of 3000, the Victoria Hurricanes hope to fill the stands and light up the scoreboard this season while continuing their championship ways. |
